Olive picking time...
Fall is a wonderful time to come and visit Italy. Warm, breezy days spliced with cool to cold nights. Little threat of inclement weather to mar an itinerary. Fewer people than the crowds in Summer. Maybe not the case for Rome, Florence or Venice but for the rest of Italy, decidedly fewer tourists. September to Christmas is the season for new concert & opera series, major art exhibitions to street markets and fairs. So, there's plenty to see & do in both city and country. And it is in the country where a buzz begins passing through October. In the olive growing areas of Italy, people are preparing their groves for harvest which, traditionally starts in November and runs through until February and even into March of the new year.
Your Italian Concierge can arrange for you to physically help with the harvest... a contadino's working vacation... in an agriturismo, a kind of country hotel, which produces & serves its own products at their meal tables. A hearty Italian meal of pasta and a pork roast with oven-baked potatoes is the best reward after a day of bacchiando gli olivi... or, hitting the olive branches full of olive fruits with a wood rake to shake them loose and onto tarps and nets below.
Or, we can take you to an operating frantoio, the mills where olives are pressed into oil, to see how it is done.
And, we can happily escort you on a tasting tour of stores celebrating both the vendemia of the previous September for i vini novelli... or, the new wines, and the olive harvest by savoring the fresh olive oil dripped on a thick piece of black bread and a pinch of salt washed down with a wine. Nothing better. Wine, olive oil and bread are The Essentials for any Italian table and of the Italian philosophy of living. And the best way to absorb all that is a quiet walk in the olive groves to follow. No problem finding them. They are everywhere in Italy.
